Aside from the planning, packing is generally everyone's least favorite part of taking a trip. With a few simple tips and tricks, though, you can streamline the process so it's easier, faster, and way less stressful.
Start early! Waiting to pack for a trip until the night before you leave (or an hour before you leave for the airport) only adds to the chaos and increases the chances that you'll forget something crucially important.
That being said, with the exception of very remote locations, remember that you can likely find pretty much anything you'll need - or at least a close enough substitution - wherever it is you're going. Make absolutely certain you have your passport or other ID, any prescription medications you take, and contact lenses/glasses; anything else can be picked up at the airport or in a grocery store.
If you are taking a longer trip, it's worth it to look into laundry facilities nearby. Pack your own detergent, as it's one of those necessities that can be extremely expensive to buy on the road. Laundry detergent sheets are ideal because they don't take up any space in your luggage, they can't spill, and you can easily bring home any that are left over. No one wants to think about doing laundry when they're on vacation, but taking less clothes means more space in your luggage for souvenirs!
On that note, if space allows, pack an empty duffel bag or foldable, large tote bag to carry home any treasures that you buy. Even if you have to pay a fee for an extra piece of luggage, it's still going to be way cheaper than shipping things home. Make sure it zips closed if you are going to check it.
If you are travelling with kids that are picky eaters, pack lots of their snacks (or check ahead to see if you can get Amazon deliveries where you're going). Familiar foods can be a lifesaver if you're travelling in an unfamiliar place.
Packing cubes are very useful. I get a different color for each family member so I can easily see what belongs to who when we're unpacking at our destination. It also gives the kids some autonomy over their own belongings.
Throw Apple AirTags in your luggage. Not only can they help you find lost luggage, but they can also streamline the process of getting out of the airport because you can gauge how much time you have to get to baggage claim.
Finally, if you have standard looking luggage (a black rolling bag, for instance) tie something distinctive to it - a bandana works well - so you can easily spot yours at baggage claim.
I just bought packing cubes for our upcoming trip and am excited to use them! I like your idea of getting a everyone a different color - lindsay
All excellent tips! We are big fans of those laundry sheets. I packed them for a 10-day trip to London when my kids were smaller and we definitely used them!
